Gendered Intelligence has a background in teaching in schools, colleges and Universities, as well as working with young people in non-statutory settings. We are also active members of our community engaging in trans activism, academia and the arts.

We also work with a host of facilitators and arts practitioners and in the past have collaborated with organisations such as Transfabulous, the Gender Trust and Mermaids.

Jay is co-founder of Gendered Intelligence and manages various projects across the organisation. He also facilitates film making projects to community groups as well as tutoring and lecturing on various undergraduate and postgraduate units. Having completed his MA in the department of Visual Cultures at Goldsmiths College, Jay is now carrying out his PhD currently entitled “Trans on Telly: Popular Documentary and the Production of Transgender Knowledge”, which explores understandings of trans identities through mainstream televisual documentaries.

He currently convenes "Kleinkunst" a series of evenings that platforms papers, performances and critical debate on “low art” short performances in variety shows, vaudeville, cabaret, burlesque and other neo and hybrid forms. Jay is also currently on the steering group for Trashing Performances, which will organize a series of events, archival projects and workshops looking at ‘low art’, as part of the AHRC funded grant Performance Matters 2009 – 2012.  The project will bring together artists, curators and academics to investigate the cultural value of performance.  It is a collaboration between Goldsmiths, University of London, Roehampton University and the Live Art Development Agency.

Jay is an active member of the trans community having chaired FTM London, a support group for transmen, from October 2004 to March 2007. He has also sat on various committees and working groups as a representative of the trans community.

Catherine McNamara is a co-founder of Gendered Intelligence. She is also Deputy Dean of Studies at Central School of Speech and Drama, University of London where she oversees the work of the undergraduate and postgraduate courses. Up until October 2007, she ran the MA Applied Theatre (Drama in the Community and Drama Education) at Central and has also taught on the PGCE Drama and the BA Drama, Applied Theatre and Education courses. Catherine is a qualified teacher and used to teach Performing Arts in a Further Education College.

Catherine was the Project Coordinator for the Sci:dentity Project (March 2006-March 2007) and facilitated during the Creative Arts Workshops which resulted in a public exhibition. She also facilitated a series of Sci:dentity outreach workshops on gender within a range of settings in schools and LGBT Youth Groups and coordinated the "Brief Encounters" Queer Youth Project in May 2008 which brought together a group of 50 LGBT young people to write a play for performance in secondary schools.

Finn is our Trans Youth Support Worker for GI. He runs the Trans Youth Group twice a month, carries out one-to-one key work sessions with the young members and liaises with other workers and professionals working with young people. Finn has worked with Gendered Intelligence as a trans awareness trainer and youth session facilitator for around three years now. His training is in youth work and before working for GI Finn was the manager of Hackney Council’s Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Trans (LGBT) Youth Project. He has been involved in various areas of the LGBT community, volunteering and campaigning for six years. Finn is from Hackney in East London, where he still lives.

Lorna is a freelance movement and theatre facilitator.  After training in dance and theatre she completed an MA in Applied Theatre at Central School of Speech and Drama.  Her work now is focused on using theatre and creativity in the community and within educational settings.  She has worked with Creativity Matters and Creative Partnerships on their Foundation Stage curriculum research projects and continues to work with early years children and families at The Circus Space and with iceandfire theatre company.  She was involved in the creation and pilot tour of Brief Encounters in 2008 and is now acting as Project co-ordinator, director and facilitator in what is now the third year of Gendered Intelligence’s theatre-in-education tour.

With a background of drama and youth work Vicky has recently completed her MA in Applied Theatre at Central School of Speech and Drama. Here she focused on using drama and the arts to open up discussion around gender identity. Vicky took part as a director and facilitator in the "Brief Encounters" Queer Youth Project with Gendered Intelligence and Fringe Benefits and has continued to develop creative training for teachers within primary and secondary education.

Alice is a freelance drama facilitator, performer and volunteer youth outreach worker with an MA in Drama in The Community and Drama Education. She took part in the Brief Encounters Queer Youth Project with Gendered Intelligence and Fringe Benefits in 2008 and has now started to work with Gendered Intelligence in a development role as well as delivering CPD training around trans inclusively and awareness.

Simon is an active member of the trans community and a practising artist. He’s worked in and around the community in a range of voluntary roles since 1997 and like Jay, chaired FTM London for several years.  He’s a firm believer in the value and importance of art and art-based projects to the community.

For Gendered Intelligence, he works on a self-employed basis taking on various roles from time to time – currently he’s helping with the finances.  He’ll also be providing admin support around this year’s Trans Community Conference.

As well as exhibiting his art in group shows, Simon works 3 days a week in the voluntary sector providing support and advice to charities and other community organisations.
