Brief Encounters

Brief Encounters is a thought-provoking, educative 40-minute play, which is acted by a cast of young lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgendered and queer people as well as straight allies.

The play is based on real life experiences of young lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgendered and queer people from across the UK. It was collaboratively improvised and written by 50 young people in collaboration with Fringe Benefits Theatre Company and Central School of Speech and Drama.

It is designed to fit into the Personal Social Citizenship and Health Education curriculum and is followed by a workshop that aims to open up discussion with a focus on:

  • Recognising difference and diversity
  • Respecting difference
  • Assertively challenging prejudice and discrimination
  • Encouraging pupils to discuss relationships and feelings.

Brief Encounters is aimed at Year 10 – 13 students and considers issues that young LGBTQ people face at school and in today’s society.

We are also keen to visit drama classes, as our collaboration with Central School of Speech and Drama allows us to offer pupils further information regarding possible future careers in the arts.

We offer:

  • The Brief Encounters performance
  • The Brief Encounters Workshop
  • Teachers pack
  • Gendered Intelligence also delivers Continuing Professional Development (CPD) and ongoing support for teaching staff.
